The Longest Raid: of the Civil War Review

You always here of the popular engagements fought in the U.S. Civil War such as Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg, but you rarely hear of Morgan's Great Raid. From July 2 to July 26 1863 General Morgan and his Confederate Cavalry of around 2500 men terrorized and struck fear in the citizens of Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Horwitz does a great job of putting together and telling the stories of all who were involved in the raid from the Confederates, to the Boys in Blue in pursuit, and the everyday people who were affected.

Mr. Horwitz has been interested in the raid since 1980 and had been collecting stories for years. He then co-chaired a Morgan's Raid Exhibit with his wife in March of 1995 at the Loveland (Ohio) Historical Society Museum and it was around this time that he decided to write the book. The book was finished in May of 1999 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for History.

The book does a great job illustrating an offended overlooked bit of the war in great detail that causes it to be little choppy at times. However the fact that it does tell so many stories makes it very hard to put down and drawls the reader in. The books comes with maps of the routes that Morgan took, along with in depth breakdowns of the two major engagements (Corydon & Buffington Island) that were fought.
