The Trip Hightlights: September 13-14, 2007

Greg and I returned to the Gettysburg Battlefield on the 13th & 14th of September 2007 and were able to get a little more in depth with some of the action then on our previous trip in 2005. After getting reacquainted with the field we followed the 15th and 47th AL regiments from where they were deployed on Warfield Ridge over Big Round Top to their meeting with the 83rd PA and 20th ME on Little Round Top. We then listened to a podcast from a battlefield guide describing the action on Little Round Top.

On the second day there we did another walking podcast tour of the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Charge (know to most as Pickett's Charge) focusing on Pickett's Division. I have to say you really start to get the feeling for what these soldiers were up against when you actually start walking the field. We then spent the rest of the day over on the right of the Union line on Culp's Hill where there was a lot of hard fighting that usually goes unnoticed do to the popularity of Chamberlain and the 20th ME on the left.

Because we had quite a bit of hiking around the field this time I didn't get as many pictures as I was looking for but we did take some video on Greg's camera. The videos along with pictures and more in depth descriptions are below.

General Reynolds & Day One Morning Pictures:

Summary:

General Reynolds was actually offered the command of the Army of the Potomac after Hooker resigned but turned it down. As the first day's battle began to escalate Reynolds was in charge of that wing of the army and was the one who actually committed the Union to fighting at Gettysburg. As he personally took command of placing the troops a Confederate sharp shooter shot Reynolds in the back of the head and he was killed instantly.

Some of the other pictures that we took while re-familiarizing ourselves with the battle are of the Seminary which both Union and Confederates used as an observation post. We then stopped by the North Carolina State Monument that is dedicated to all their soldiers who fell in Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Charge and also is one of the first Confederate monuments on the battlefield. Finally we went by Pitzer Woods where Longstreet's headquarters were located and got some more pictures of his monument.

47th & 15th AL, Big Rount Top, & Little Round Top:

Summary:

In the afternoon of the 13th we started off on Warfield Ridge where Hood's Division of Longstreet's Corps was deployed for their attack on the Union left. We followed the track of the 47th AL and15 AL regiments as they searched for the union left flank. Their journey took them over Big Round Top to the eventual meeting with the 83rd PA and 20th ME on Little Round Top.

There are two pictures of hills in the distance that are of Big Round Top and Little Round Top from the view at Warfield Ridge. Then some pictures of Greg and I on the Summits of Big Round Top and Little Round Top. The bust is of Colonel Patrick O'Rorke of the 140th NY who goes unnoticed to most but probably had as much to do with holding Little Round Top as Chamberlain did. The 16th MI actually broke and the 140th filled the gap and while leading his men O'Rorke was struck by a bullet. The next few pictures are of the 16th MI monument, Devil's Den and Houck's Ridge from the top of Little Round Top.

Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Charge & Culp's Hill:

Summary:

The Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Charge (know by most just as Pickett's Charge) is one of the most debated actions of the Civil War. The amount of ground to be covered along with the obstacles that must be crossed made this a daunting task for the Confederate Army. Armistead's brigade of Pickett's division actual punches through for a time at an angle in the Union line, but didn't have the support to hold the ground for long.

Over on the right of the Union line there was a lot of hard fighting that gets looked over quite a bit because of the fame of Chamberlain and the 20th ME on the Union left. In fact an Indiana regiment (27th IN) was decimated in a counter attack in which the Union was trying to regain some of their original defensive works in the Spangler Meadow area.

The pictures at the right start us out and the Virginia Monuments then we get some views of some landmarks at the Emmitsburg Road and finally some close ups at The Angle. Then we have some pictures from Culp's Hill which was the right of the Union line along with a couple of Indiana monuments on that side of the line in the Spangler's Meadow area.

Gettysburging & Camp Life:

Summary:

While the battlefield took up most of our day the campfire lit up our night. I have to say that staying in a campground where you can have fires at night really does add something to the experience and I would recommend it to anyone who is going. Also to anyone who is going out to the east coast specifically Pennsylvania you need to try some Yuengling Beer which is absolutely great stuff. Yuengling (pronounced jingling) is the country's oldest brewery and I would suggest both the lager and premium beers and if you can find it on draft even the better.

On the last night we were in Gettysburg we hit both Tommy's Pizza which was really good (or it might be that I haven't ate a real pizza in a really long time), and then we headed to Reliance Mine Saloon for a few Yuenglings on tap before our last campfire. Here are some of our pictures out and about.
