The Battle of Corydon, IN & Morgan's Raid Index: |
| General Morgan's Raid: July 1 To July 26, 1863 |
John Hunt Morgan began his raid on July 1, 1863, and crossed the Ohio River on July 8th. Morgan didn't really meet any resistance until he reached Corydon, IN where the only other battle besides Gettysburg took place on northern soil. After Corydon the raid continued on, and Morgan made his track through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. He was finally caught just before he reached West Point Ohio on July 26, 1863. Morgan was placed in an Ohio prison but escaped, and then was eventually killed in another Kentucky raid. |
| The Battle of Corydon: July 9, 1863 |
On July 9, 1863 around 11:30 am, the home Guard of Corydon, Indiana received the word Morgan was approaching from up the Mauckport road. The Home Guard of about 450 under the command of Col. Lewis Jordan formed a line of battle on a hill about one mile south of town. About an hour later the enemy appeared in small number and the first wave of Morgan's men were easily repulsed. When the rest of Morgan's force arrived they attacked the center of the Home Guard's line, but the Guard was able to hold. Morgan then ordered his men to attach the flanks, and due to the different in numbers the Home Guard's line broke. After about 20 or 30 minutes Col. Lewis raised the white flag and the battle was over. |
